Common Pond Skater - Gerris lacustris
Size - 15- 20mm long
See them - April to October.
Hibernation - October to April
You can spot this insect as it skates about over the surface of the pond, it uses its 4 back legs to move itself, and the front pair of legs to catch prey. It feeds on insects that fall on the water, and can sense their struggles through the water surface.

Some have wings and can fly which is probably how it arrived at the pond.

Pond Skaters spend the winter hibernating away from water, arriving in April when they start to mate. Eggs are laid on underwater vegitation, the young insects are called nymphs, and are often eaten by the adult insect.
