The Gatekeeper is also known as the Hedge Brown, it is similar in appearance to the Meadow Brown, but has white spots on the hind wings rather than black on the Meadow Brown.
The caterpillars feed on grasses. The Butterfly is only seen during summer, it overwinters as a caterpillar.

The Gatekeeper is also to be seen in flower gardens in the village.
