The Red Admiral is a migratory butterfly, that over winters on the Continent, arriving from March onwards.

It does breed here during the summer monts, laying eggs on stinging nettles, which the caterpillers then eat.

It is a big butterfly, and is easy to recognise, it is a butterfly that feeds on flowers, and on rotting fruit.
