Picture of Common Rush

Common Rush - Juncus conglomeratus
Flowering - . May - July
Height - 30 - 60cm
The photo is of Common or Compact Rush. Conglomeratus means crowded together.

True rushes (Juncus) have solid or pithy, usually cylindrical stems. There are 3 different sorts in the nature reserve.

Common rush has a hard, rounded button-like flowerhead. and strongly ridged stems.

Soft rush (Juncus effusus) has a loose open, olive-green flowerhead and smooth, scarcely ridged stems.

Hard rush (Juncus inflexus) has a loose cluster of dark brown flowers and more slender, strongly-ridged, glaucous grey-green stems.

Rushes have been used for basket work, used on floors instead of carpets and the spongy white pith scrapped out of the stems and used for candle wicks. .
